Hi Chris, I am the proud owner of an EDDYSTONE 940 but it has developed an O.C. gain pot.
I have tried without success to aquire an original. Can you please tell me what to ask for on the internet. Is it LOG or LIN, tapered, WATTAGE etc. I know it is wire wound. This is my first visit
and the site is very wellcome.
    Thank you in anticipation,

    Dear Sir,
Many years ago I purchased a second hand Eddystone receiver in its original cardboard shipping box.
I remember trying to use it ( was in full working order ) with a long wire aerial, I even bought an ATU on someones advice.
Can’t remember the model but it has a BFO knob, and now is stored in a nice dry container awaiting my retirement (coming up fast now )
What I need is a VERY VERY BASIC book on how to use this lovely old receiver.
Am not in the least bit technical so something childishly simple on how to operate and listen would be perfect.
Hoping you can suggest something suitable.
    Many thanks,
    Chris Green.

    • Chris. you will need to identify the model number of your receiver so you can down load the instruction manual from the website. There is also some useful general information booklets published in the 40’s and 50’s that you can also download to help “Getting the best out of your receiver”.

  4. Hi – I am trying to find some information on a set I have recently acquired called the ‘Eddystone Popular Two’. It also came with an Eddystone moving iron loudspeaker. I have been given some history about the set and the original owner – it has been in the same family since it was first bought around 1925 or 26.

    Any info gratefully received

    Dave

    • Dont recognise the name Eddystone Popular Two but there were a number of two valve sets in the mids 20’s Have a look in the quick reference guide to pre-war sets in the Eddystonesets section of the website. Chris G0EYO

  5. I own a 730/4 which, when acquired, was in good working and cosmetic condition. The tuning cord failed whereupon I dismantled the receiver to attempt a restring. I was not successful. All the parts were carefully indexed, and a set of photographs taken to record the key steps of the hoped for reconstruction. In the event, I could not find anyone interested in attempting the restring in return for a fee. I am not sure where to go from here. There seems little point in retaining the receiver for an indefinite period when it is non-operational. Comments would be appreciated.

Thank you Chris for your early response. I have studied the guidance that exists and made several attempts to carry out the procedure. However, a slight hand tremor has defeated my efforts to satisfactorily complete the process. I am now thinking that I will need to dispose of the 730/4 which hopefully has some value although I question if it will attract much interest given its present condition.
        Regards;
        Bryan

        • I understand Bryan, things get more difficult as we get older. I have disposed of all my Eddystones because they became too heavy to work on. Probably the best place to seek assistance although not easy to find is the Eddystone User Group Yahoo Forum, that has several hundred members and they will see your plea. I fear that not many people will read the comments section of the website. Details on how to join the Forum are on the website but come back to me if you cant find it.

    Dear All,

Fisrt of all, Congratulations for this wonderful website, keeping Eddystone’s traditions alive.

I’m a 59 years old, and I became a radioamateur in 1974. My grandfather was responsible for this. He was as old radioamateur of the 30’s. Amazingly, He presented me with a Eddystone model S640. It was the best gift that I gained during my childhood. The Eddystone S640 opened the doors to be a radioamateur.

Recently, I acquired a S640 requiring a good restoration. I’m an old Fighter Pilot and a Retired Airline Captain, but I decided to give life to this equipment. I will definitely need support. I’m sure this adventure will bring to me the same joy of my 12 years old.

    Kind regards,

    Miguel Dau – PY1KZ
